I was reading some posts on Howardforums.com, and a few posters said that if you live in a big city that has a Chinatown, you can find some of the higher end phones from Motorola, Sony, Nokia, and Samsung for noticably cheaper prices. Thing is, I'm not sure if the phones only come cheap if you sign up with a plan through them.

Can anyone confirm any of this, and if phones from these places can be purchased cheaper without having to sign up for a plan?

You can bargain with them. eBay is slightly cheaper if you don't mind waiting a bit.

Yes it is with new service. You usually have to sign a contract with the dealer in addition to the one with the carrier. They get a charge back on commission of anywhere from 6 months to one year, so you can't change your plan within that time or the dealer with charge you. And it doesn't have to be in chinatown lol, there are a lot of dealers that will do it, but I guess it depends on your city.
