Phoenix police say one of their officers shot and wounded a man who had been holding a burglar at gunpoint inside his home.

Sgt. Tommy Thompson says the incident late Wednesday happened as officers responded to a flurry of calls in an east Phoenix neighborhood, about shots fired, a wounded man who acted strangely after being let into a good Samaritan's home and finally, a break-in at a nearby home.

Arriving officers found a screaming woman who had fled the last home with two children while her mate confronted the intruder.

Thompson says officers went inside, ordered everyone out and saw the armed resident coming down a hallway. One officer shot the 35-year-old man several times, but he's expected to survive.

    Officers then detained the intruder.

The officer was responding to a shooting call near 32nd Street and Thomas. Shortly after he arrived, he fired his weapon. The officer was not hurt.

Witnesses said they heard about 10 gunshots around 8 p.m. Wednesday.

I know there's not enough info but it doesn't say anything in the article about him being given any orders at all. One can only speculate.

He was, otherwise the officer WILL lose his job. Media only gives parts of the story to make the officer look bad.

There's so much training pounded into me, I bark orders as soon as I clear leather.

"Create a witness" they told us.

Now see, if the home owner had returned fire and wounded the officer, the home owner would be under custody. Ill bet meanwhile, the officer wont even lose his job

Because he was doing a job. Rule #1 when you shoot an intruder - when the officer gets on scene, lose the gun. People play tricks, he DOES NOT KNOW WHO IS BAD AND WHO IS GOOD when he comes on scene, so he assumes everyone is bad. It is called officer safety. Homeowner doesnt drop the gun at the first order, homeowner gets shot.

SWAT came in & kicked the door down on a house down my street today. No clue why, but I'm assuming it was drug-related.

Funny, I always saw it as the other way around. I'm not saying it's not true.

Why would the homeowner approach the police when he was still armed? It just doesn't make much sense.

unconscious incompetent. a lot of home owners who own a gun dont really understand good gun etiquette. he probably came down the hallway holding the gun but pointing it at the ground. point is the gun was not holster which would make anyone nervous. on the other hand LEOs should use better judgment, but at the same time, its their life and i guess they're suppose to control the situation and then work out the details later. and besides your avg joe home owner does not know that majority of the guns out there now are drop safe. meh eh IMO this is one of those "shit happens" situations.
