Did the dust get into your PC and goof it up? Were you able to keep it relatively protected?

I'll be a Camp Victory for a while, so I won't have to move it around too much once I get there and it will be in a relatively 'normal' environment except for the dust/sand. I just don't want to spend $$$ for a laptop and have it be total shit by the time I leave.

get a laptop with good build quality (apple mbp or thinkpads with steel hinges), couple cans of compressed air to spray out the gunk, spare adapter and battery and you'll be gtg.

Mine got jacked up the first time, more from getting knocked around traveling and being stuffed inside an ILBE pack and crap than from dust. I'm bringing one with me again this time knowing theres a decent chance it'll be complete shit by the time I leave. Sitting in once place shouldn't be a problem for it.

my shit's workin fine, i don't get much dust build-up inside because whenever i'm not using my computer i put it in a condom or my bag. I would say get some canned air, but we're not allowed to have it

Not allowed to have canned/compressed air? Where are/were you stationed?

the biggest worry is fucking it up in transit. be easy with your electronics and have them in some sort of protective wrapping, especially when everyone's nut to butt on the C130 or whatever. dust and elements won't really be an issue because you'll end up in a decent CHU at liberty.

it's a widespread thing because retards keep huffing them. your CO can waive this.

If they were the ones with self contained crypto and sat shot, then they are sex. Saw the development of those first hand.

First laptop I had shipped from dell. Worked fine, until shortly after coming back home. Died on me, this was my first laptop actually, bought in 2004. Never again will I buy a dell. Second one I had out there was a Sony VAIO, worked great, despite having dropped it several times. Now I'm on a MacBook, can't go wrong.

I had one of those Dell Inspiron's that last two deployments out there before it shit out. :dunno:

I thought that was pretty good for as much as it got tossed around and what not.

If you buy one and then take it over there and it gets screwed up, you have to buy another one. Why not dodge that situation and shell out the 3k now for a laptop that you can take anywhere?

Ah well sucks for those that can't have the canned air.

I bought a Dell XPSM1530. I have the Dell 3yr nextday warranty and complete coverage through USAA. The USAA coverage is cheap and I couldn't not get Dell's Warranty but USAA covers pretty much everything and no deductible.

my MacBook made it just fine. I bought a case for it and had no problems, even with dust. I also bought condensed air from the Px anytime I had the chance.

I know a guy who took an Asus 17" to Camp Victory. Came back without a scratch, and still works just like the day he bought it? It's all about how you take care of it while you are there.
