Time for a serious discussion, how do you guys feel about people on places like DigitalPoint, and online that charge close to nothing for logos, designs, coding, etc.-- Awhile ago, I believe $30 was the going rate for a logo over there now I'm seeing logos and design work for as low as $5 and as high as $9.-- I know those who are good at it can charge more, and provide English support and time, but what do you guys think about these people doing this. I feel like they are in a sense lowering the pay-rate bar for everyone, when does it become a point when we no longer can make more than $60HR, because there's millions of other's willing to do it for $10 an hour, etc.--

If you had an actual degree you wouldn't be doing shit on DP for $10.00.

I personally don't consider Associates Degree even a degree. Most Online Marketing firms that are looking to hire "professionals" are typically looking for someone with at least a four year degree or five plus years of industry experience.

Why would you say you have a degree when you clearly do not have one. Regardless of when you will graduate you still do not have a degree. It's like saying I have a wife but we are not married yet...no matter how you spin it she is not your wife.

I have a B.S in Computer / Software Engineering Degree and IF I want something I know is a waste of money, I take on little web odd jobs to pay for stupid shit. Other then that, I don't waste my time since there are people in india that will win the bid anyway ( $200 for these massive sites... fuck that.. ). When I do get web development jobs on the side, its usually because of word of mouth. I take them on even though I don't need the money. So to answer your question, Yes I think it hurts the freelance industry, No it doesn't hurt people with actual degrees because most of the time they are working fulltime jobs.

Did you guys read the Wired article about this topic? It's pretty good. Either way, the twitter folks paid 6 bucks for the bird logo.

degrees are overrated right now in my opinion. one of the companies i did marketing work for was a job recruiting company.

we were basically the middleman. All we did was setup a script to scrape monster, send the resumes to some bitch getting paid 10 bucks an hour to sort through them and forward a list off to our clients.

Your degree is pretty worthless in a lot of things now. It just shows that you are dedicated enough to learn something for 4 years.

its all about who you know and who you've worked for

    /my opinion.

This is true. Degree + Experience + Personality = marketability. Sometimes, it helps if you know people, but not as much as you would think. If you're still a p.o.s., you're still a p.o.s. and will be made real quick.

    i got that.

and people pay for what they get. don't do it, or do it for friends for free to build up your portfolio.

if you are really caring about what people are charging $9 an hour on digipoint for crappy logos and think they are your competition, you have no belief in you work and should look for a job in manufacturing.

unless you can consistently charge $50 an hour, or more for your freelance a work, you should just think of your design work a hobby and enjoy whatever money you get from it and work another job to pay the bills.

BUT NEVER SELL YOUR SKILLS FOR CHEAP!!!

I'd rather make somebody a logo for free, than have somebody pay me less than $200, and that's a bare minimum charge.
