alright, I work at a wal-mart and I had a customer come in last night and was asking me about the Processor for a laptop. It is a Toshiba laptop, I believe this was the exact same one: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5946617

they asked me what "number" the Processor was. I kept telling them it was a Duo Core, but I was unsure of what the exact naming scheme would be. they kept insisting/questioning if it was a "4" or what they called "Pentium-M". I did a quick search on google, but didn't really find anything confirming any name/number for the duo core processor.

question is.... anyone help here? thanks :wavey:

That's a Core Duo processor (not Core 2 Duo). Tell them that Intel stopped using the numbers they used to use, but that it's basically a Pentium 5.

Oh, and the generic term is "dual core", not "duo core". Core Duo is a brand name; dual core is any CPU with two processors on the same chip.

And you're a fucking idiot. I never said it WAS a Pentium 5. I said it would be easiest to explain it that way to someone who doesn't know shit about computers.

Lying is NOT a good idea, especially not to someone who doesn't know about these things. Misinformation coupled with lack of information is a DANGEROUS combination.

Which is pretty much how I feel about you... You know just enough to be extremely dangerous... You know how to start a fire, but do not fully appreciate that fire to know what it can do and how to handle with it.

As a result, you prefix everything with "if" or other absurd conditional statements.

Please simply become a fly on the wall and you might even learn something.

Oh god, not this spiel again.

Fine, Jolly, how would you explain it to the average Wal-Mart shopper, especially one who thinks that buying electronics at Wal-Mart can possibly be a good idea? I can't help but notice that yet again you've failed to offer a suitable alternative to my suggestion.

I would tell them the TRUTH

    It's a T2450. It's 2GHz with dual cores.

What happens when they ask what kind of Pentium that is?

Couldnt you just explain to them that the Pentium line ended? Make a dumb analogy if they still dont get it. Dodge stopped selling the Neon, but introduced the Caliber. The Caliber is the Neon's newer, better, safer, more efficient, replacement. Its still a Dodge... its still good (if you like Dodge's).

    /horrible analogy
/my participation in thread that is already out of control

Yes, but i was saying make the dumb analogy AFTER explaining the real description/definition/reason... not in lieu of it. So, no, not exactly what you said, but close. I actually agree with you and Jolly... tell them the real reason/definition, but if they still stand there dumbfounded, you may have to resort to a dumbed-down explanation.

IMO a true dumbed-down explanation would be as follows:

"No, the Pentium line ended. This processor is part of the new 'Core' line. This is the 'Core 2' processor. It is not a Pentium."

If they're still standing there, mouth agape, point them to a Pentium Dual Core or a Pentium D.

Telling them "Oh, it's a Pentium 5" just to get them out of your hair will boomerang on you the moment they're (finally) set straight and made to look like...well...idiots. They'll come back to you, pissed off and ready to split melons.
