Pensioner discharges shotgun, nabs criminal AN elderly Callan man discharged his legally held shotgun late on Friday night during the latest spate of robberies to hit the town. The pensioner managed to grapple a would-be-burglar to the ground until gardai arrived from Kilkenny City to take the young man into custody. The bashful hero is now recovering in hospital from his ordeal. The man in his seventies reacted swiftly when he heard one of his neighbour's houses being burgled late on Friday night or early Saturday morning. Both barrels He rushed out the front door of his own house, in his underwear, and let fire with both barrels to frighten off the intruders and to alert neighbours to what was happening. Later on Saturday morning, friends and family became concerned for the popular pensioner and he was rushed to St Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny where he remains. Callan has been targeted by a criminal gang in recent months and the home of the man in hospital has been broken into three times in recent months. His actions on Friday night were prompted by his resolve to put an end to the crime spree which has affected people, in the town and frightened many, especially those living alone and the elderly.
