is my form wrong? if this exercise is common with causing shoulder problems/discomfort, is there something I can replace them with?

I've tried pec deck and incline cable flyes and they both hurt 'em, but presses don't.

    maybe, maybe not.
They hurt mine too. When I do flys I make sure that I have some bend in my elbows and keep my elbows further toward my waist instead of perpendicular to my body.

I can't do flys either. I've had surgery on one of my shoulders in the past and I just can't extend the weight out like that.

    I subbed in DB incline.

try using cable crossovers.. the pecdeck machine might just be following the wrong 'path' for your shoulder, thus causing pain. if you using the cables, you'll get the same movement, with constant tension, but you'll be able to move in a more natural motion

I don't have pain doing cable cross-over. My shoulders can go in, but can't go out if you know what i mean.

As soon as I open my shoulder that wide with weight in my hand my shoulder starts to slip and it feels like my rotator cuff is going to explode. :o

One major thing most people do very wrong with flys. Flys don't have to be done super heavy and people end up using too much shoulder and what not to lift the weight. With flys, especially with shoulder problems, keep the weight low, the reps high, and the form perfect. Also really concentrate on the squeeze at the top of your rep but remember not to hit the DB's together.

I can't do pullovers. At all. I forgot once last year and on the 2nd rep my shoulder slammed out of socket and the fucking girl working behind the desk even heard it and nearly puked.

Word.. I like it as well. I like it heavy..

I like the flyes as well, though. Nice chest burn.. and trance is right - the lower the weight, it almost seems more effective.

Before I switched to cable/db flys I would just put my palms on the pec deck pads and do flys that way. Keeps the shoulder rotated the right way and still gives you a good squeeze at the top
