Anyone have experience with an web based credit card processing service provider? I need a way to accept and approve payment in person without purchasing any telephone line based equipment.

I'm only considering PayPal's service because I'm already a customer/member and they're reputable (besides their BS claims division). Their rates are $30/mo + 3% + .30 per. Which seems to be on par with others I've looked at.

As another option BofA provides a broadband PIN pad program $15/mo + 1.67% + .20 per with $140 setup.

What are my alternatives? I really would prefer to stick with a big name.

Is it quicker or at least comparable in speed to conventional methods?

Well...you have to have an Internet connection and I have found that to be my biggest bottleneck. Sometimes I have teather my laptop to my phone to get a connection and the speed isn't the greatest, but that would be my internet connection NOT paypal.

Also, I have to manually enter all the information (cc number, name, purchase amount). I am not sure if they sell a card swiper that is compatible with this service or not. Most of our sales are over the phone, so it wouldn't matter, but some are face-to-face.

How many transactions a day do you expect to have?

Probably 30-45 per month, not too many at startup.

I'd like to avoid having to call them in, that's why I'm looking at web based programs. Even if it's not financially savvy paying more for that extra convenience.

I have no problem entering the fields for customer's name/addy, etc. but am beginning to wonder if it will present an 'unprofessional' image it being not the 'normal' procedure of swipe & sign.

It is slightly cheaper (before per transaction fees) to go with Bank of America's broadband card reader at $240 vs $360 at PayPal annually.

edit * I think I've convinced myself to give BofA a try. Familiarity for customers > My preferences

Never heard of the BofA solution. I am going to check it out. Do you have a link handy?
