would it be possible to burn a copy of a dvd and make it so that it requires a password to be viewed?

You're talking about DVD that can be played in a DVD player?
Then no, not really possible. You can make it harder to get to the play with menus.

Now if you burn it to a DVD as a data disc, it might be possible some how.
Possible for sure in this case if you compress it using ZIP or RAR and password protect that file.
    Other wise I don't know.

this is truth, i would make a very confusing menu with hidden/hard to find buttons, but that's not fool proof.
