I have a big trip coming up and I'm going to need lots of passport photos for visas, ID cards, etc. I looked up the guidelines for making them yourself and found this:

I don't have a studio or anything close to one, so I'm not sure how good my attempts would be. Has anyone taken passport photos before?

Should I just get some taken somewhere and scan/print them to make copies?

just go somewhere, its not worth the chance of having it rejected to save $5. many many places do it. your local AAA office is usually the cheapest if you're a mamber.

They'll take the photo at the post office where you get your passport.

Most places will take it for under $10....Walgreens, I think CVS, AAA, etc.

However, the Post Offices here do NOT take the photos so you might want to check on that in your area...

i took mine with a P&S and the passport office had no problem with it.

Costco does it too...dont' do it yourself because you'll be pissed if for some reason one of the passport checkers decides the photo isn't good enough and you're stuck.

    Passport expediting service like http://www.passportnation.com/

There are regional Passport offices in cities like Houston, LA, etc that issue passports on the spot. You can wait in line yourself to go in, but there is only a certain number of spots for walk-ins. There are also a certain number of spots that these services have "permanent reserved" so they don't have to wait in line. You send in your stuff to them and they act as your agent to get your passport expediting for a nice fee. I think mine cost around $200-$250 with the cost of the passport when I had it done this summer.

Or you can pay the $60 expedite fee, put your date of departure as 2 weeks out, and get it in 8 days...like I did.

    Fuck those travel companion agencys.

It all depends how far out the date is that you are actually leaving. My $3000 trip wasn't worth risking saving a tiny fraction compared to the cost of missing the trip. When I got mine in July, the wait according to some travel forums I visited was about 4 weeks for expedited. It just wasn't worth the risk to try and save $100.
