I went to HEB to get passport photos taken and the guy whipped out a cheap digicam. I was like "wait, are you just going to resize that to 2x2 and print it?" He said he was. I thought that's ridiculous for $8.

Is there any reason why I can't just do this at home?

The above site reccomends no, but it seems like pretty straightforward PS. :hsugh:

    can you - sure
is it worth the time - probably not. its not like it matters what it looks like, and if you have to redo it or the reject it, thats just a time waster

AAA does them, but I think theres a pretty standard price.

They do a have a lighting diagram online, and the background has to be a similar color

In Canada I think you need to be certified to take passport photos. They use a cheap digicam because the quality is more than good enough.

It's not actually for a passport, I just need it for a local ID. Plus I'm pretty sure I can duplicate the HEB setup. They had a little white screen and the ambiant lighting. :hs:

I took my own passport photo. Didn't have any problems... the big thing is using the right paper, that's probably the most critical criteria.

Okay. What's the "right paper?" It's not just photo paper?

:uh: Okay I give up. Still, it seems like I could take a picture and resize it faster than an old man in a supermarket photo lab. :p

Sure, you can do it, you just need to make sure its sized exactly right. Those places that do it have neat little software that will automatically make it the right size with the face taking up the right percentage of the white background, then they have this little cutter that does it to exactly the right dimensions in one cut.

You can do it at home, you may just take a few tries to get it to the proper dimensions. At those places that do it, its basically fool proof.

To me, wasnt worth the time and I had someone do it.

I just had mine done at a Meijer. It takes while to get your passport, so I didn't want to bother with sending in my own pic, only to have them send the shit back 3 weeks later.

i did mine myself after I saw them whip out a 5 year old digital camera. I set up my tripod and stood behind a white wall and cropped it to however the passport application wanted.

I used Epson Glossy Photo Paper.

It worked fine despite it not being on their list of suggested papers to use. I guess the main concern is that it has to be able to withstand the heat when they adhere the photo to the passport, at least that is what they told me. And if you know what you're doing, this can be done in five minutes... that's less time then it would take you to drive to a store and go through that hassle. But that's just me, I'm a graphic designer so this was quite easy and quick to do.
