    Hey everyone,

I haven't owned a standard until a month ago. I bought an 05 CTS-V. Love the car but I've been told by several people that I shouldn't park it in neutral (with the parking brake on).

When I do leave it in 1st gear it shudders forward hard. Should I leave it in a lighter gear (5th?) or is it fine to leave in neutral with the parking brake on?

Parking in neutral w/ the parking brake on can warp your rotors, but only if the brake system is hot, like after hotlaps on a track. Everyday driving, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

When you're parking it in-gear, shut the car off first, then let the clutch out :hsugh:

    Power makes learning easier, IMO.

It all depends on the situation. If I pulled in to the parking lot I just leave it in 1st or 2nd, w/e gear I was driving in. If I coast into a space and it is pretty level I just hit the parking brake. If you are on a hill you should ALWAYS do both. 1st or reverse.

In 1st gear or reverse, with the parking brake on. You always want a backup to hold the car in place in case something snaps.

I'm neutral/parking brake person unless it's on a hill, then wheels turned, in gear and the brake.

Our garage is level and the parking lot is level so it won't really roll anywhere, I just don't need some jackass deciding to try pushing it around the parking lot.

Someone was telling me the other day that in Europe, if you're parallel-parked on a flat street, it's customary to leave the car in neutral with the parking brake off, so other cars can tap your bumpers to move your car a few inches if they need to.

Obviously this doesn't apply if your car is the last in line before an intersection, though it would be funny if you forgot about that exception -- to me, anyway.

guess it's okay to pakr in neutral with the parking brake on although i'm trying to get into the habit of leaving it in first

remind to never own a nice car in Europe...

Don't forget to curb your wheel if you park on a hill.

Not to worry, you'd have to own your own business to be able to afford one anyway.

I just throw it in reverse and be done with it, except on hills when I leave it in reverse and set the parking brake.

I always leave mine in gear.

Friend had an older pos and parked it on my driveway (semi-steep). He had his parking break on but didn't leave the car in gear. Well, the parking break cable was so loose that the car was very slowly rolling down the driveway. Leaving it in gear would have prevented this.

Go on joy rides, look for twisty roads that will require lots of shifting. Drive hard and shift even though when normal driving wouldnt require shifts. Practice accelerating hard out of corners. This helps a LOT in traffic like when pulling in front of people and being nice so they dont have to slow.

If it's rolling forward when you park it in gear with the parking brake on you're either not pulling the parking brake hard enough or it needs adjustment. It should be resting on the parking brake, and in gear as a backup stop.
