They live next to a bad neighborhood, but not in a bad neighborhood. They had a break-in down the street less than a year ago. They have a dog (my dog) but she is a wuss and gets scared when I come to the door sometimes. I want to buy them a pump 870 just in case. I talked to both of them and they said

Mom - "I'm afraid your dad would get angry and shoot me"
Dad - "I'm afraid your mom would get angry and shoot me"

    Comforting, I know...

Anyway, you think that giving them a shotgun for HD is a wise decision or not? I would sleep easier at night knowing that if someone kicked their door down, "we have the nicest house in the neighborhood" they would at least me able to barricade themselves and my little sister in a room and have it aimed at the door.

If you read this, thank you for your time.:)

If they don't want it, they won't practice with it to be able to use it so I wouldn't bother. If you can get them to come on a couple range trips with you maybe one will open their eyes but trying to force one on them falls somewhere between useless and dangerous.

    Jesus people :ugh:

I have guns in my house, and I get angry at my wife all the time, I don't shoot her.
She gets angry at me too, and she knows the combination to the locks to get to my guns, and she doesn't shoot me either.

If someone isn't mentally prepared to use a firearm to protect their own lives then they shouldn't own one for that purpose IMO. They're more likely to have a ND and injure someone, unless they're willing to the take the responsibility of learning to use it.

Ok, I won't. They were joking about the shooting each other thing, I should have made that joke a little better.

Take them shooting so that they get comfortable with the idea and get responsible with a firearm.

My parents were like that too (sorta lol), but now they are pretty open to the idea of a home defense gun.

If they do not want it, its not smart to put a gun in the house. As someone said, they wont take it seriously, they wont become familiar with it and they will always be scared of it. That could lead to more problems if they ever had to actually use it.

I think you'd be better off spending money on a really good home security system that would hopefully scare someone off if they try to break in before it ever got the point of needing to defend themselves.

Another nay vote here because if they don't want one, they wont spend the time to learn how to properly use it. Should a stressful situation like a break-in occur, odds are it'll end up hurting one of your family members instead of the bad guys.

It's an imposition to give them something else to worry about.

Get them a couple Mark V cans of OC spray.
Those can't be used against them.

    One and the same.
bear spray comes in larger containers.
I'm partial to the foam, but the cone spray is good as well.

Even if you were to give them a fire arm, I highly doubt they would practice with it, be prepared to use it in a defensive situation (such as operating in the dark) and not likely to be able to pull the trigger. Not to mention every so often cleaning and oiling it.

Since they are not willing to go that route, you may want to look at a non-lethal devices that they may accept. Mace for example.

My parents are extremely anti-gun. Well, at least my mom is. My dad doesn't really care one way or the other. But my mom would go absolutely ballistic.

My little sister picked up a Mossberg after some problems in her apt building and my dad just was just a bit surprised, but didn't have anything negative to say about it. My mom, on the other hand, was furious, scared, confused, etc. She's the same way about me having motorcycles. Neither of them have any idea that I have the guns that I do.

That having been said. They do live in a very nice neighborhood and crime is almost non-existant. However, in my mom's case, she does do some volunteering for her church and that can take her to bad parts of town. I've tried and tried to get her to carry some sort of spray and she just claims she forgets it, or left in her other purse, etc.

For the house, they have a nice alarm and big heavy doors. That's about it. Some homes just aren't gun homes :dunno:

Sounds like you are trying to teach a pig to whistle. Can't be done, and it annoys the pig.
