    Published: January 15, 2009

PANAMA CITY - A Florida Panhandle fishing boat captain has admitted to making pipe bombs and throwing them at dolphins to scare them away from his lines.

Fifty-year-old Garry Alvin Key of Panama City pleaded guilty to two federal changes Thursday in U.S. District Court.

He could face up to 10 years in prison for possession of an explosive device by a convicted felon and one year for attempting to take a marine mammal.

Sentencing is set for March 25 in Panama City.

Federal prosecutors said he was arrested in August after state conservation officers received a tip he was making the bombs to kill dolphins.

I'm guessing that if he went 12 miles offshore, he'd be good?

Fuck dolphins. If they're so smart, then why don't they evolve lungs like us smart humans did? I mean, shit, even blacks have lungs.

This man should receive a medal.

Last year I was fishing off the coast of Fort Meyers, early in the AM. I'm zoned out, and have been staring at my line (fishing bottoms) waiting for even the slightest bit of movement. All I see is a hazy blue/green color, and I'm starting to nod off to sleep. Then outta nowhere, a huge fucking gray shape appears out of the darkness of the ocean. Starts tapping my line, then the gray beast shoots straight up out of the water right at my face. I totally scream like a little girl, and fall back onto all the fishing tackle, where I am stabbed in the back by several hooks, and my arm gets cut by a fillet knife. Fucking flipper nearly gave me a hard attack, and then tried to finish the job via indirect stabbings. Of course, the mother fucker followed us around the bay we were in, and fishing was a bust.

I was so pissed, I was totally going to go Ahab on it with a gaff, but by that point there were other boats around (who heard me scream), all watching the commotion. I figured it to be a bad idea to ruthlessly slay the star of a childhood show, in view of others. Dolphins = Death.

  9. Dolphins are nice to me. I was in Roatan diving with my dad one year, and we were on the dive boat heading for a dive site and we spotted a big pod of dolphins. We stopped the boat and all jumped in the water with whatever gear we had on. It was sweet, the dolphins swam around with us for a while and then took off.

I don't know if this makes a difference, but Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission receives federal funding and law enforcement agents have jurisdiction to patrol federal waters. Their fleet includes offshore boats; they also intercept drug runners and perform "homeland security" duties.

  18. I believe that when you're in international waters you're under the jurisdiction of at least the country of your vessel's registration.

EDIT: I guess that changed in 1994.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_waters

Now international waters are ruled by the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Thank God! Finally something with some weight behind it. Nobody would dare defy the UN.

Just goes to show you can't make stupid people smart. Obviously it didn't occur to him to not do something along the lines of what already got him arrested.

Any member of the UN is authorized to enforce UN declarations at-will. The US could do whatever they wanted to that guy if he was caught pipe-bombing dolphins in international waters.

Is it actually illegal to kill them in international waters though? :dunno: Pretty sure the Japanese kill dolphins and whales.
