I'm looking for a P&S and this one seems to get pretty good reviews. Here's the conclusion at dpreview:

Anyone have any better suggestions in that $250-300 price range? Especially one that has some exposure controls.

Well, besides ANYTHING else, the Canon S5IS is a baby DSLR with almost all of the manual controls a real DSLR has, as well as a spiffy auto mode if you don't feel like thinking.

bought one for my mom, its decent, oversharpened and noisy in low light, but its decent, awesome size for the zoom

That Canon S5 IS looks pretty awesome, I might spring for that depending how much I can get it for. I work at Best Buy and the cameras are usually marked up pretty high. At least I know I can get accessories for dirt cheap. I like the Panasonic's size though, but I'd really like some manual options so I can do more with it.

cameras have very little markup, especially canon.

    accessories are another story though.

you might get 10% off, as canon had 15% markup when I was selling at frys

The markup is a bit higher at BB than Fry's.

If you're primarily taking day pictures, go with Canon point and shoot.
If however for night pictures, the low-light king is Fuji.

    True story.

The zoom on it is trash, the camera feels cheap, the whole thing is a turd. However it does get sack rode like a mofo. Not sure exactly why...
