I am going to be needing mobile phone service in the US, and it has to be through Sprint, so I'm torn between these two phones.

These are the highest rated, and I think newest smart phones available from Sprint. I am leaning more towards the Treo because I think I will like Windows Mobile more than the BlackBerry OS.

I'm not really sure though. What are the ranges of hack-ability and getting free apps for each phone?

I have a blackberry 8330 and love it, also the curve has excellent battery life. I played with the treo 800w recently, and I think it's much improved from the older model. Has a really good feel to it. As far as 'free' apps, i'd say the treo, with the blackberry a lot of programs are lock down to your phones pin number.

The treo already comes with word, excel, and powerpoint. Blackberry doesn't, not until OS 4.5 is released. At the moment, I have a beta 4.5 install which include docstogo, but unless I pay for premium I'm unable to create new files for word, excel, etc. only open and edit them. Don't know if this will be the case with the final version of 4.5.

create a blank doc into your docs folder, name it "blank.doc" then open it to create a file. when you save it, change the file name. you'll have a perpetually blank doc there to use as a new doc as long as you never overwrite it.

Go with the 8330. The navigation from Sprint is pretty damn good, I no longer use my Magellan GPS anymore. At the gym, I listen to streaming music and tv with Sprint TV.

The EVDO service is pretty damn fast too. There just seems to be a huge support for Blackberry. However, I have never looked into any Treos, or their support base.

I've been using the 8330 on Sprint since May and it's easily the best phone I've ever used. Go with the BB, you wont be sorry.

I'm under the $99 Simply Everything Plan.

I abuse the shit out of the service, I think.

I got my mom a simple 500minutes +rollover with AT&T, and that comes out to about $56 a month. Therefore $99 doesn't seem bad to me for everything that I can do with the BB.
