I'm a broke ass newb and know I need some good products, but just using what I have now...which is basically meguier's 3 step line with gold class wax

I detailed my spec-v on the weekend, got it real shiny

the wife got jelous and wanted me to detail her car...it's a very very very neglected red 96 civic...we bought it 2 month ago, the paint's faded, mismatched...so I figured what the hell i'll give it a shot

did a small area on the hood with the meguier's 3 step...hugeee difference...so I said sure, started on the roof..noticed the applicator was turning red...the paint cleaner, I had to use a LOT, it seemed to vanish into thin air...I stopped there, some of the areas I couldn't get right, even after doing the cleaner 3 times...ended up polishing and waxed...still doesn't look right...and the paint coming off worries me

figure i'm gonna do some more reading and order a porter cable...been wanting one for a while

just wondering if any of you guys have seen this? I've owned tons of cars, have always done the 3 step, but have never ever seen this...

I can take a pic if y'all want...it's in horrible shape :hsd:

and from my understanding the car's sides have been repainted..but not the hood/roof...and they really don't match

the hood/roof/trunk has a white 'film' on it...real nasty

The paint that is coming off is single stage paint (no clear coat) and that is normal. You are removing dead paint.

Yep.....This is normal. Messy, but normal. The paint has no clearcoat (a layer of clear paint) and has become oxidized. Once completed, you will need to pay more attention to single stage paint. I like using Meguiar's #80 on single stage paints too. It's oils really help bring it back.......
    Here's one I did a while back.....

As you can tell from the title, this was the biggest restoration I've done to date. It's red with a ton of oxidation. This was yet another referral. The customer is about to sell this vehicle so he wanted it extremely clean. He has over 10k in mods to it. 329HP to the wheels on pump gas; 389WHP on 104 octane! This was the first time I got a tip before I even started on a vehicle.

    Here's what it got:
    (Actually took some before shots!)

    NXT Tech Wash
(Clayed while during the wash cycle)

    Meguiar's #80
    (EDGE2K Yellow Pad at #6)
Had to clean this thing out 6 times! And it's double sided!

    XMT Machine Glaze
(EDGE2K Orange Pad at #4 setting)

    Souveran Liquid Wax-2 coats
(EDGE2K White Pad at #3 setting)

Once again, a tough one. About 5-6 hours on the paint alone. Interior was really clean so no shots of it. #80 took all the oxidation off with one pass and polished out nicely. Again, XMT glaze stole the show giving it the wet depth followed by the gloss of Souveran.
    Customer was extremely pleased!

    Befores.......
