I was able to secure a backlink for an imageuploader of mine on an .edu domain.

How well will this impact my search engine rank with google, if any?

In my opinion it depends on how relevant that edu site is to yours. When you get back links from completely unrelated sites it's possible it will not help your rank at all. However if it is related to you may see a small increase.

If it's related, even in the slightest, it'll help out a little bit.

Your best bet is to get links on sites that have the words "pic", "photo", "image", etc., on them.. such as myspace profiles, stickam profiles, forums, etc.

Make sure you have your most important keywords in on your site, then the code that's used has anchor text when people put it on a site.
