For those who've done them, what is your max?

I read an article where a college strength coach said that the most accurate gauge of someones athletic ability, weight room wise, was what he could overhead squat.

I just started them to help my felxibility for snatches, but before I'm all done I hope to O-H Squat 225. Right now I'm at a whopping 105 lbs.

    What can you guys do?

Most of the lifts that are actually worth a damn can be dangerous

I've done complete (below parallel) reps with 185 for sets of 3 and tried 235 though I was above parallel. Did the 235 in the rack.

I hold a wooden dowel rod over my head for these. Might weigh 5 lbs. :hs: I do them while standing on a 2x4 which adds some additional difficulty. It's surpsingly effective.

I tried them with 95lbs and had some balance issues. I think after doing them for a while and getting used to the movement the weight would go up quickly to a point.

You would have to be able to get 225 over your head first.

Really its used as an accessory move to the snatch. It's used in oly programs tho like the front squat to help position the body also.Typical oly program features the back squat for strength and the front and overhead as an accessory. Its better for helping out the snatch in my opinion.

The quote said "athletic ability" not raw strength.

mehh it said athletic abillity in the weigth room.
I think it could be a good indicator of strength/abilluity, just not THE one lift, there are many other lifts that should be equally compared

I met plenty of shitty athletes that are extremely strong. The overhead squat is a good indicator of flexibility, balance, and coordination.

A wide stance squat in 2 ply suit w/ 2 ply briefs, wraps, and a belt is a good indicator of a wide stance squat in 2 ply suit w/ 2 ply briefs, wraps, and a belt.
