How much could I safely overclock a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with a decent fan+heatsink combo?

depending on a ton of other factors, most people are maxing out around 3.3ghz, but that's dependant on the motherboard you have, the actual CPU (you can see differences from batch to batch of the same cpu), how well the case cools, how good your ram is, etc.
IMO, keep the load temperature under 50c and you should be good. Just make sure to stress test the system, run something like prime95, super pi, [email protected] or [email protected] overnight. A big overclock is useless if it locks up when it has to work.

with a good heatsink and good case airflow.

What heatsinks have you been looking at?
