last weekend I upgraded my parent's computer from W98 to XP home when I was back in town. this morning I got an email from my dad saying that in the new OE installed on the computer, his old mailboxes and stuff are gone. does anyone know if those are stored somewhere on the computer and it's just a matter of importing them, or are they gone for good?

I'm not at the machine so I'm trying to just get a quick answer I can give to my dad.

    thanks!

you'll probably have to go into the settings in OE and tell it where his personal folder for outlook is located.

depends on how it was set up initially.

i'd start by looking in the "Documents and Settings" folder.

That's why you never upgrade. Always backup, reformat, install.

Search for .dbx files. You'll find a folder called Outlook Express somewhere with a bunch of them. When you import, point it to that Outlook Express folder. If it doesn't work, its probably because he had very old version of Outlook Express and now the new one is refusing to deal with it. It happened to me once. I had to upgrade it from OE4 to OE5, then to OE6 because OE6 refused to import from the OE4 database.

OK I'll have him look for those files. thanks.

and, if it was my machine I would have reformatted, but it was my parents. I don't live there and rarely even visit. doing the upgrade was mostly painless and kept all their settings and stuff.

I'm going to buy one of those "No. I won't fix your computer." shirts to wear next time I go home to visit my parents. The last several times I've gone, I've ended up working ontheir computers the whole time I was there.

haha, i've been doing it my whole life. this time i got fed up with it because I couldn't even check my email without getting popups. they were completely hosed with CWS and several other trojans, not to mention the fact that it was W98. i just told them "im going to fix it, let's goto best buy so you can buy this shit"

sounds like my last visit. my dad had pop-ups when IE wasn't even running.

installed AVG anti-virus, adaware and spybot and deleted a bunch of obvious stuff and then ran the three programs. between the three programs, there were 190 or so different objects found. AVG found 128 on its own.

You can search the MS Knowledge base to find out where the mailbox folders are and how to get them back in to OE.

the mailbox folders for OE are located in some god aweful location. In W98 I think they are somewhere under Common Files>Microsoft>Outlook>Identities>{some big number}>Outlook Express

In WinXP/Win2K they are somewhere in Docs and settings > UserName in a hidden folder.

and remember when you do copy them, you have to move a file called folders.mdx (it will exist in the new location, you must replace it)

it's easy to find... right click on any message, select properties, and it will tell you where it's saved --> usually in documents and settings, local settings
