Depends how much they get paid. I made $6000 at my gov't internship in Oak Ridge, TN during college; but, I designed a small web-accessible database system that would have cost them probably five times as much if they'd paid SAIC to do it for them, and I did it so well that the SAIC programmers who implemented it asked my supervisor to have me create a checklist of considerations that future designers would need to keep in mind when writing their own SRS (software requirements specifications) and SFD (software functional design) documents. So in that instance, they got their money's worth.

In any event, you (or somebody) hired the intern for a reason, so give the guy a little freedom to do the work that needs done according to what he thinks is best, and hold off on passing judgement on his expertise until after you see whether he manages to give you what you need by the deadline. He'll learn a lot more about whether he knows what he's talking about if he has to bail his own ass out of hot water than if you keep him away from the fire in the first place.

I wasn't fighting with him, I was just telling him he was wrong. That's totally different.

anyway, to give you a real response... it just depends on the intern and where he/she came from. Interns from big universities end up getting data entry work, and "learning" a little bit when engineers have time to give them some pointers. Very rarely do big universities give you any hands on real work experience. Smaller technical schools? Sure. Again, depends on who you get.

Isn't perl keyword number 2 or 3 in job listings?

I'm pretty sure the top 3 words in job listings are "Three To Five".

Yeah, that's pretty much what I said, and it goes both ways too. If I'd gotten another internship I might well have been the office's Heated-Beverage Supply-Assurance Technician. As it was, they told me "Do X", and they pretty much left me alone save for staff meetings every week.

As in 'No more than three to five years served for felonies' ?

I meant technology keywords, numnuts, for tech job listings.

I'm beginning to get a better picture of why you do your work floating in a pool.

I meant "Three To Five years of experience", and you are the one who has the nuts that are numb.
