i was doing weighted dips today, and my top right pec (where it meets my collarbone) felt like it was being ripped apart.. i dropped the weight and did them normally... same feeling, like the shit was getting torn away from the bone or something... this may be a noob question, but is that a good thing??? like, is that what its supposed to feel like?

yeh is it bruised? It doesnt sound good, you could of torn the muscle quite severely, how much were you lifting?

If i were you, id stop doing upper body exercises until it feels better, or go see your doctor, you could do serious damage.

dips definitely have a very low benefit/injury ratio vs other exercises

A lot of people get that sort of pain from dips...I've never seen a valid explanation for it though.

Still do dips, compound movements help put on bulk, while bench press's work well, stuff like dips, pullups, squats, deadlifts will help you get stronger quicker. But you just need to check your form, you use more muscles, so there's the possibility of hurting the muscles your not used to using!

This is exactly why I never go over +45lb on weighted dips anymore.

I don't like dips because they just don't feel good when I do them... I feel it too much in my elbows.

I don't have anything to back it up, but it seems like a lot of the younger guys are the ones having pain while doing dips.

I have never experienced any pain doing dips...eventually I was doing them with 75x12, but recently I stoped doing them completely and now I reintegrated them into my workout on chest day. By the end of my chest day my triceps are done so I never really go high in weight anymore on those.
