    A buyout is possible, but it looks like they will be shutting their doors very soon. I'd expect an announcement in a week or two.

    Things there are so bad, my brother-in-law (who runs the local Ritz here) has taken to selling lenses and cameras on ebay and craigslist since NO ONE is coming into the shops.

    UPDATE: See below. I'm too lazy to copy/paste.

    I thought they were all closed by now? Ask your brother-in-law how much he'd let a 14-24 go for...Ive been seriously considering this lens.

    yeah.

    they are trying to sell to someone else, but it doesn't look likely. If they don't sell in the next week or two, they will be shutting all their stores down.

    Ritz can't afford to buy inventory, so many stores will have limited supplies.

    gotcha.. I was gonna say, if they announced a closing but DIDN'T, that would explain the empty stores :mamoru:

    Most people learned the liquidator drill when Circuit City closed. Won't see any deals when Ritz goes. Is that innovative Ritz manager mentioned above selling at deep discount on CL and eBay or is he doing something like buying at employee discount and selling + $20-30?

    dunno. As far as I know, he's just taking the inventory, listing it on CL/ebay for whatever price, and putting it down as an in-store or "phone" order. All legit, a bit below store prices I think. I'm not totally sure.

    Won't matter in a week or two...

    And you're probably right about the "liquidation". i know when CC shut the doors, the "liquidation" sale prices were more than the regular prices as they were trying to recoup as much as they could. Customers were pissed and yelling at the CC employees who had 0 control over the prices. The liquidation company just sent 1 person in to oversee the closing, to drive prices up, and get as much money as possible. I imagine Ritz will be the same thing.

    at CC?

    Of course. There are enough people who saw "Sale" and assumed they were getting a deal. Much of the buying public are as brain dead as cattle. Stick a big red banner that says "closing sale" and you'll move product, even if it's 20% more than regular prices.

    of course, this is all according to reports from CC employees I heard on some radio show. I believe all of it though, as it sounds like what I would expect...

    update: Ritz has been bought out. By Ritz.

    They are resturcturing, and coming back as a "new company". Nikon is way involved. They are boxing up all Nikon items, which Nikon is buying back and will then resell them back to the "new company" once the paperwork is done.

    Ritz isn't going anywhere for the time being.

    there were deals to be had at CC, you just had to be in the right spot at the right time. I knew of people getting $5-600 lenses for $100 in some cases. Flashes cheap, memory wasn't so cheap iirc.

    the biggest problem with liquidation sales is that the smart people that are waiting for the realistic prices to hit end up getting nothing usually because the mobs have already taken everything at the higher prices.

    I'm not sure. If it all goes through, I can see a firm edict being handed down to push Nikon like whoa.

    "Yeah, Canon has undergone some changes and are off their game. Nikon is where it's at."

    :werd: but if Canon doesn't put up a product that is worthy of the competition, then perhaps they deserve to flounder... or do a Sega like restructure and quit making bodies, focusing on epic glass instead. :dunno:

    The D300, D700, and D3 are great bodies, and canon's gonna have to do something better than the 5D2 to compete.

    ...that'd be like Sony/Microsoft... i see more harm than good after the fact due to infighting over which side controls what. :sad2:

    Nikon=bodies, sensors
    Canon=lenses

    it would make all those people who want white/red circles happy:mamoru:

    of course Nikon is still pulling their sensors from Sony:o
