Who would be interested in pitching in to purchase a monitor calibration device for OTAP to share?

Feel free to suggest ones that you would like to consider.

I will keep an ongoing list of people and their willingness to donate. Once we have enough and we agree on something good to purchase, I'll buy it and everyone can paypal me their donations.

The way it will work is that the people who donate to purchase it will have first dibs on the calibrator. We will keep a list of people wanting to use the calibrator, and those who donated will be automatically bumped above those who didn't donate. Each individual will be responsible for paying to ship the calibrator to the next person.

    Donators:

    1. Xenon Supra $10
    2. Horselover fat $20
    3. Bloke $15
    4. Tonster $10

    Total: $55

The problem with this idea is that you really need to calibrate your monitor every two-three weeks. I have a Spyder that I use very frequently and I'd hate to have a wedding to process but my calibration device was being used by someone else.

    cliffs and what that means?

Why do you need to re-calibrate, what does it do, why is it important, how do you do it. etc...

Your monitor color will "drift". It doesn't stay exactly the same. While the drift over a couple of weeks is subtle, you can see a difference when you calibrate your monitor.

I only use an LCD screen so I don't know about tubes.

There are a series of them leading to your computer, aka, the internet, but that's not important right now.

Though you do bring up a good point, we can rotate this around and each get it every 3 months or so probably. It is still a very cheap alternative to paying $150-200 for a good one individually.

Most of us don't do professional work where the colors have to be absolutely perfectly correct 100% of the time.

I calibrated my monitor about 8 months ago, and every print I've ever seen of mine ordered from smugmug looks perfect, and I'm pretty picky.

Every 3-6 months of calibrating is still better than nothing IMO.

    You are 100% correct though.

what type of calibrator are we speaking of here? I mean I would think minimumly you would want one for dual monitors. I mean if we are speaking of something like the Heuy, well i got one and they are like 50 bucks. but if we are talking like the colormunki, i might throw in just to see how bad mine is. something that measures luminence would also be nice

I applaud you guy's initiative but what happens if the device breaks or is lost? Who pays for it?

Sharing is a wonderful idea but the reality of it can suck at times.

I was thinking pretty high end.

I don't know much about them honestly, maybe others can throw ideas out there.

mine is currently calibrated with the spyder 2 i borrowed from a friend. it was super easy to use and quite awesome.

this is the new version $150

i would assume whoever has it last is responsible for it, how it could become "lost" is a stretch unless in transit. i would assume whenever it is shipped it will have insurance on it?

This is true, I guess its just a risk we're willing to take. I'd hope that everyone takes into account it is a community device and takes extra special care of it

Just because all your friends buy a monitor calibration device and jump off a cliff doesn't mean you get to do it as well.

    bingo

even if I'm not due for a calibration, I go ahead and do it before I start editing from a shoot.

so sometimes it's every weekend, and sometimes it's 3 or 4 weeks.
