This is the first photo I've ever posted on here to be critiqued. I'm still a huge noob with my D50.

However, I got engaged this weekend! So I took some various pictures. This was one that resulted, and I kind of liked it. The only changes I made (aside from resizing it) were to convert it to black&white. I cut out the ring before the conversion, and then put the colorized ring back in the picture. I had to adjust the colors of the ring to make it look less "red". I took most of the red out, and some of the green, although I wish I would have pulled even more green out from it.

    What does OT think?

EDIT: This shot was hand-held, and not really "planned out". I was taking landscape pics of the spot where I proposed to my fiancee, and had my 50mm f/1.8 on still. It was very hard to pull back far enough to get this in the frame! It was taken in auto-mode (i know, i know), and this was the complete shot. No editing was done to crop the picture or change anything.

I would appreciate all comments/criticism. I can provide the original file later, but I am at work now and only have this resize. Are there any changes I can make to it to make it look better?

My suggestion is desaturate the whole pic and mess with the curves to make it pop out more......looks too bland right now

I desaturated the whole pic to make it black and white in the first place.

So, you are saying to leave the pic in black and white (aside from the ring), but to adjust the curves of the B&W picture to make it stand out more? I thought the curves thing only dealt with color.

(as you can tell, I am a noob at this).

I do have Photoshop CS2 though, so I should be able to make required changes.

I do my B&W using the Channel Mixer and clicking "monochrome". If you post the colour I could take a shot at it. I like the shot though, nice tones.

Shot's a little flat, like Nick pointed out. You kind of lose the hands in the background...needs more sepration. Nice subject tho.

lil S curve added, mostly to raise the highlights. minor levels adjustment bringing the highlights slider in. a tad of vignetting/burning at the edges.

*shrug* there are multiple ways to convert to grayscale, some other ways might produce a better original to work from.

thank you very much, and thanks for the advice/rework of the picture. I am going to try again at this pic tonight with some of the ideas from this thread, and repost again tomorrow (or late tonight).

2.3mb, so careful there. Thats the full, straight-from-the-camera picture. It was shot in highest settings for JPEG (no RAW available, sorry).

In general I like it a lot, the only thing I don't like is how you see the highlighting around her wrist by where her sleeve was...plus its so dark now, it just looks like her hand is floating in air, rather than coming from inside a black garment.

what all did you do to the picture to edit it?

    Figures.

I don't do many B&W conversions and that was with an alternative method.....

Here is a channel mixer attempt. I'm bored so I'm just practicing/messing around with something I don't do a whole lot of.
