My sister is a vegetarian : no meat, no fish, no eggs. She's fine with dairy like milk and yogurt.

She's not against protein suppliments but says she wants to get most of her protein from whole foods... I just don't really know what to tell her.

if I didn't love the taste of food so much and had the spare time I would be a vegetarian. it seems healthier anyways. I would probably still eat chicken and fish though, just not meat so I wouldn't be a true vegetarian

The following similarly named diets are related to vegetarianism:
Pesco/pollo vegetarianism (semi-vegetarianism, poultratarianism) — will only eat certain meats depending on the particular diet (pesco-fish, pollo-fowl).

Legumes (lentils, beans, etc.), grains, tofu, tempeh, whey are all good.

I'm a vegetarian - I did fine without the whey before hand, but I am lifting now and trying to gain body mass, so I supplement with a shake everyday. Depends on how active she is.

First thing she needs to do is make sure she is getting enough calories - unless she is a lifter, the rest should take care of itself.

the problem with getting protein from foods other than meat and eggs is that it isn't used by the body as well.

The only problem I can see is that most of the vegetarian protein sources are crap for a few reasons:

Quite often they are incomplete plant sources, or they have terribly amino acid profiles. IIRC baked beans have lots of methionine but are lacking in some other amino acids.
You would need lots of varied sources all of the time to have a good stream of all the amino acids.

A lot of the time the sources are very high calorie. Nuts are a good protein source but due to the high fat content 100g of most nuts have about 600kcal. To get 40g of protein from nuts you'd need to eat 200g of them which is about 1200kcal.
