Need one for school, specs don't matter right now. Just want a reliable one that will last me at least 3-4 years while in school.

    Asus K60 $479

    Toshiba Satellite L505 $549

    Dell Inspiron 1545 $549

Don't list the specs or anything.

But Asus is my preferred brand in laptops.

Get one with a manufacturer's waranty of 3 years. I only spec Lenovo at this point. All Acer's we've had in the company have turned to shit between years 1 and 2. Toshiba's same thing, Dell - well you've at least got a warranty to back it up. Our company switched to Dells last year and despite our reservations, I have to admit they haven't turned into complete junk.

And as cool as it is to have a 17" screen, you'll want to slit your wrists for having to buy a heavy computer to lug around.

Thanks for the replies! What spurned this topic more was what I read on Engadget regarding laptop reliability. I know it all depends on user expertise, personal use, etc. and is highly variable.

What does anyone think of Sony?

My vote goes to Dell. We are an all Dell shop at work. I don't have much bad to say about them or at least the machines we have. I've been here 7 years and we have 3 Inspiron laptops still in use that were bought before I was hired.

HP, Dell, Acer, Asus, etc. all use cheap components. Buy your computer based on support. If you don't want to talk to someone in india for support, or want quality on-site service next day, buy Lenovo(maybe gateway, but they are still far behind lenovo on support).
