Preferably small and compact for easy mounting somewhere. What are some good online retailers and brands?

Cobra 29 >* not real small but about the best for the money.

Unless you step up to a Northstar or Galaxy. What are you going to use it for?

I'm going to be using it in heavily wooded areas, so the more powerful the better. For Jeep trail rides.

yeah if your doing that, just clip the mod chip, peak it at 3 watts carrier with a power mic, you'll get about 15-20 watts of mod swing

should be fine for a good 30 + miles

There is a Cobra that is a single hand held unit that a lot of people like for trail rides. Hides under the seat, full powered. The main thing is your antenna.

I've got a cheap-o Midland that was on sale at Amazon for $20 and it does fine. Also have a radio shack handheld with external antenna and mic that is VERY handy on trail rides. You can get out with it if you need to spot someone to communicate well.

Don't bother with a magnetic mount if you wheel in wooded areas. Go ahead and mount it.

Here where I live there is a ham radio/electronics swap meet at the local college every first sunday of the month...I've heard they are common elsewhere I would try looking into one of those...I've got stuff for really good deals there...just try to make sure the stuff works bring what you need to test what you may be looking for

    Here it is:
    http://www.bills2way.com/equip/75wx.html

The rest of it, the base, goes under your seat or whereever you want to mount it out of sight.

BTW, getting one with weather band can be really handy too.

Standard CB radios only put put 4 watts, its not possible for it to dead key anymore without a AMP unless its a specific radio like a HR25-10 or a RCi 2950/2975
