I got a free desktop from my brother that I am going to use for Photoshop. Fwiw, since I am pretty computer illerate......its a Dell Dimension 2400. The service tag is 8V3Y231, if that might help understand what I am dealing with.

I know the stuff is old and far outdated. I also know that I can run Photoshop on it as it is right now, since the processor isn't that far off from what I have on this desktop. The spare is Intel P4, 2.4GHz, with 256MB or RAM. I know that RAM is really low.....is it the only thing I should be concerned about upgrading?

Tips or suggestions? Should I definitely replace some things, or let it roll? Also, I am going to be connecting these two PC's together.......if at all possible. I have 2 monitors.....so I really just need a way to transfer my pictures to my desktop for internet use.

Also, on a side note.....I have the monitor linked below. It is DVI ready......but I have no clue what I need to have to connect it using DVI.

    Dell Dimension 2400: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim2400/en/sm_en/specs.htm

    3 x PCI Plugs (only)
    Integrated Intel 3D Extreme Graphics

    No DVI Plug

The Dell Monitor page you linked SE198WFP is "discontinued"
    But the connection states: - "DVI-Digitaligital , - VGA"
Obviously you can only have VGA

The machine is not worth updating (too old, released pre 2004)
But if you want it to run normally, add about 512Meg of Ram (ideally x 2) then update to SP3 (since SP3 is likely not installed on 256Meg of Ram)

Your biggest problem is the video. If that machine had even an AGP port you could get a fairly modern card. But on that machine you are stuck with the onboard graphics, which are weak. They do make PCI graphics cards but they are unlikely to be better than the integrated graphics.

Can you or anyone link me to the RAM I need for this? I am openly retarded when it comes to hardware/software. And I assume it will be "plug and play", or do I need to do something after installing?
Ok I think both of you answered that question then. I am DL'ing SP3 now too actually. I'll just use this PC until I can build a better machine.

Any PC2100-3200 DDR module will work, you can probably find some cheaper than the ones in the links above.
