I really need a new lens for my 30D. Here is what i have

    -Canon 30D
    -28-135mm @ F/3.5
    -70-200mm @ F/4L IS
-insert something wider than 28mm here

Now I played around with a buddies 17-40mm F/4L all day yesterday and was impressed, but I would like to go a little wider if i can keep a quality similar to 'L' glass. Any suggestions?

*I have no problem putting out the money for 'L' priced glass...$600, $800, $1000...whatever, I just want excellent results. I think i would settle for a nice fisheye or semi-fisheye, but examples of images shot with the lenses you guys come up with would help.

Brands, F/ stops, and at best links would be nice. IIRC Canon does not offer a lens that goes to 10mm.

I mentioned seeing examples because i think you are talking about those Sigma or Tokico lenses and im a little unsure about them right now.

I have also been looking for something wider for my 30d. Looking more for something like 17-40 or 17-55...

    Canon 10-22.

Of course, I expect a certain member to come in and say you should get the 24-70 for it's corner sharpness. ZOMG! RAWRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!1one

I dont think i would bite. Im looking for wider than that. I mean, i dont want a print to come out looking like i held it under water and rubbed the corners with cotton balls but still...

That 17-40 F/4L kept the sharpness real well, but i think im still looking for something a BIT wider. Im looking into the Canon 10-22mm as i click submit...hold on a sec...

I know, I was being sarcastic. If you're around enough, you'll either get used to it or IL me.

10-22 and the 17-40 are both good lenses, but the 10-22 is going to give you wider angle shooting that the 17-40. Both will be softer in the corners than a normal zoom, the 10-22 has more barrel distortion and is slower than the 17-40, and it's EF-S mount. So long as you understand the limitations, then either lens would be just fine.

It's up to you and what you shoot to determine which would be a better buy though.

You could also consider the Tamron 11-18 or 17-50: http://www.tamron.com/lenses/prod/diII.asp or the Tokina 12-24 or 16-50: http://www.thkphoto.com/products/tokina/index.html as alternatives.

Look at samples from each lens here:

BTW, EF-S lenses are just fine with the limitation that they won't work on fool frame, film or pro bodies.

You are talking about the EF-S one, correct? I guess if that one seems to be performing real well i might have to think about overlooking the fact it wont work on my ELAN 7. Any shots on that lens?

Probably the 10-22 like every body's saying.

It has above average performance in all IQ metrics, whereas most of the competitors have some hidden downfall (usually CA)

hell, i was bout to cheap out with the tamron 11-18 for $325, but people told me to take a pass on that. I saved some money and got the 10-22 (thanks for the suggestion guys). On a whim i went to a camera shop and tried the Tamron 11-18 i was considering, all i can say is that i'm glad i saved an exta couple bucks for the Canon 10-22 efs.

Another that should be suggested is the sigma 10-20mm, that lens is nice, and has the lens hood, and a decent pouch included in the price.
