Looking for a first rifle since I cant get a pistol. For pistols you need to be 21 im not. I could have my brother grab one but he has some warrants out. I need a cheap (under $300 perferably) rifle that is easy to maintain and fun to shoot. Anyone has any reccomendations? I think an ar-7 would be cool but they are weak and not very nice. But for $150 I don't think it's half bad. Cheap ammo is prefered but also I want something with power. Reccomend away!

a powerful rifle will not have cheap ammo. as it's your first, i'd say get the 10/22 and learn the basics. you can then move up to a larger caliber later. you can find the Ruger 10/22 at Wal-mart for less than $200. that leaves you plenty of money for cleaning stuff, hearing and eye protection, ammo and range fees.

    SKS...?

Actually I bought a Glenfield/Marlin 60 in a pawn shop for $47. It shoots good too. No much room for upgrades like the Ruger 10/22, but I'd say I got my money's worth from it.

Why would you want a gun at all?

    But okay, i'll bite:

    -Cheap purchase
    -good quality and reliability
    -cheap ammo
    -but decent power

    You want a Kel-tec P2000 9mm carbine. :wiggle:

if you only get one gun, you have ot get a .22.
nobody should start shooting with anything other than a .22.

I'll 5th or 6th the 10/22. Great gun, lots of fun, cheap to shoot, more stuff available for them than you can shake a stick at. I have one in stainless with the laminate stock and love it. We have a couple more in the family too.

Another vote for the 10/22, that's the ultimate in cheap to shoot (unless you count a bb gun lol) and as mentioned there are tons of accessories for it.

10/22 or a sks or ak variant, those are fun to shoot, and ammo doesn't cost much either.

That kel-tec is pretty cool but I dont think its legal in ca. Pistol grips thats why from what a friend told me. It sure looks nice though. Post pictures of your 10/22 if you guys upgraded it. I want to see some ideas for mine.

Big5 has the gun listed on their paper. Does anyone know how good these guns are? Pretty cheap gun, might be fun just to have but I would like to know what you guys think of it.
