I obviously would rather have that than other telephoto's, but $500+ is pretty steep for me at this point in my life..

Can I see some sample shots of its excellence??

It's a fantastic lens. Very light and sharp, probably one of the sharpest zooms Canon makes (behind the f4 IS version). If you like the focal length, it's great for the price.

i had a similar lens and the focal length was hard to use on full frame.
for a crop body it might be enough tele though.

I absolutely love mine. Worth every penny. All of these were shot at 200mm on a Rebel XT, if you'd like to see some mid range and 70mm stuff let me know.

i've wanted the 70-200 f/2.8 IS forever now...i just can't get myself to spend the 1500~ or so on it considering i don't really use photography to make myself money and it's more of a hobby than anything

how does the f/4L compare to the 2.8 IS?

Marginally sharper, better saturation, a lot lighter, a lot less expensive. And a stop slower without IS.

    how light is the 70-200 f4, non-IS?

I think about buying one sometimes when I dont feel like lugging the 100-400 around, but still want some reach

Tack another f4L user on the board. I love mine, I've shot in dark light as well with great success.

If you really need the 2.8 and think you'll use the 200mm end more than the 70mm end, you can pick up a used EF 200mm f2.8 II for under $600. This is an extremely underrated lens, some compare it in sharpness to the 135L.
