I'm looking for recommendations on a new head unit. It is going in a 01 Jetta and can be either single or double din (although I would prefer single)

I was thinking Pioneer Premier P800PRS or P880PRS. I believe the P800 is the 08 model, the 880 is the 07 model. At any rate, there is no one around me locally that carries one so I cant go check it out. Also, I did get a chance to try out a Pioneer P6000UB but I'm not really feeling the single dial for volume and track selection.

The main feature I am looking for is iPod compatibilty. I want something that works well with the iPod. My current head unit, a Kenwood excelon that is about 4 years old, works terribly with my iPod. I want the head unit to work flawlessly with the iPod. For the sound system, I still have the stock speakers but I added a sub and amp. I want the face to be removable as well.

Also I want something reliable. I dont want to go over $350 for the head unit.

What other head units should I look at and which one would probably be the best?

When a head unit is advertised as ipod-compatible or ipod-ready does that mean it will only work for ipod players or also other mp3 players?

Any single DIN four button navigation iPod interface is going to suck.

the interface only works with ipod... but they usually have jacks you can plug into the back, that will atleast let you pipe the audio in.

some head units have usb in connections where you can use a flash drive if you'd like to (or if the mp3 player has a usb input). some make you pay, some dont (my premier makes you pay for the cable but I installed another premier that came with the cable and ipod connector... same company, figures)

Also, some head units like kenwood actually have the usb in on the front of the head unit.

I'm not sure but for what it is worth, my premier hu uses an "ipbus"

basically, its a wire that runs from the head unit to a control box for my ipod. But you could get a usb one, bluetooth, sat radio, etc. They all link to each other with this ip bus cable (like each is piggybacked).

Now for the other premier I isntalled, the 800bt, it uses a usb connection through the back of the hu that either the ipod cable or usb cable hooks up to.

As for the kenwoods I mentioned, they have ipod connectors in the back and the usb port in the front. I never had personal experience as I only played with them at the shop.

I have a creative mp3 player and don't plan on necessarily getting an ipod so I'm probably best to go with a aux input unless I want a usb for flash drives or something correct?
