I just got called out yesterday to install a 2003 server for a company that is switching from Macs to PCs running WinXP Pro but the owner is keeping his G5 since its the only one that wasn't an old iMac. Anyway, I've created AD user accounts, joined the XPPro's to the domain, and everyone can log on no problem. The G5 can see the server and when he clicks on it, it asks for a username and password. The problem is that it keeps rejecting the logon. Error 5000 I believe which he Googled and found that its an authentication failure. I know Windows NT/2K/2K3 has services for Mac but I thought that OSX didn't need that. Is there something I need to do on the server so the G5 can connect to SMB shares?

The logon dialog he gets has three fields: workgroup?, username, and password. The first one defaults to the netbios name (ie pre Windows 2000 name) of the domain. Maybe I should try to fqdn (domain.local). Are you actually typing the domain name & the username in the username field (like you did above)? I'll give that a try next time I'm out there.

You need to change the local security policy on the windows 2003 server. Win2k3 uses kerberos encryption as default, but windows 2000 didnt.

it's a big help man.....a 15 second install and viola...8 characters or more passwords......change your password on the fly and instant connectivity to the 2k3 servers.
