I officially have my ship date to basic.

    February, 6th 2007

I am truly excited. Been running, and got my sit-ups and push ups going as well. I however havent been swimming. I start that in January.

Any word on Cape May, NJ in February? I used to live in Wilmington, DE so I have a general idea.... but thats a good 3 hours from Cape May, if I remember correctly.

    USCG here I come!

    wish me luck!

What job will you be getting after basic? I've never known anyone that joined the CG.

Good luck! Start swimming as soon as possible. It is a serious cardio workout. I keep considering joining the Coast Guard when my time is up in the Air Force. I have my reserves about staying in the military though :(

from what ive heard... talking with two navy guys who say that if they did it over again, would of gone Coast Guard. Helped make my decision.

I was approached by a NAVY Vietnam Vet today, who after hearing me tell my dad about my ship date on the phone, come and shake my hand and tell me a few stories. and thank me for what im about to do for my country.

it was really a great feeling.

i know how you feel. within a week of my arrival at a-school in pensacola, i was at a hooters to get some wings with a few of my shipmates. we racked up an $80 bill and some guy (Navy Vietnam Veteran as well) came up to our table as the waitress was about to hand us our check...and he gave her his credit card to say " i got it". we were in our working whites so he knew we were navy.

it was an awesome feeling. but at that same time it's like wtf do i do? this guy was in the fucking vietnam war and has served his country for 30 years and he wants to shake MY hand and pay for MY meal? it was crazy. i absolutely could not stand myself. i bought him and his wife a bottle of champagne out of gratitude. i knew he wouldn't let me though so i paid the waitress on my way out and she delivered it as i was getting into my car. sure, i spent a lot more money that day than i wanted to...but i truly appreciate all those who have came before me...they had it a LOT rougher than we do, that's for sure!

as a new recruit in the armed forces, just make sure that when a vet thanks you for enlisting, you take the time to let him know exactly how much you appreciate HIS service for all the years of commitment he put in. male or female. because you havn't done shit yet but sign papers, you know?

great lakes will probably be colder than new jersey in janurary-february. it gets close to 0 degrees there during the peak of winter. you're obviously navy, what rate are you going for?

Even as a Cadet at Norwich I've been approached by people that thank me for my service. It makes you feel good, but it also makes me feel like I'm getting credit that real heroes deserve. Just because I can put on a NU class A tunic doesn't make me worth anything.

Glad to see you bought that man a glass of champagne! My dad is retired O5 USMCR and goes out of his way to buy drinks and pick up tabs for any serviceman in uniform he comes across. He served 23 years, he is my hero, and those boys and girls coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan are my heroes as well. I pick up their tabs, and I know that one day I'll probably be in that situation doing my best to politely decline! :big grin:

GSE, my boy joined the coast guard about a year ago. He currently is waiting for some kind of school and is basically a base janitor in Philadelphia. :o

If you were in the AF that would be a prime date to make BTZ and test a year early barely making the cut off for testing!

I have friends in the 172nd SBCT (Army) stationed in Alaska. I hear it's pretty boring up there.
