I'm about to order some cactus triggers, a 2nd flash/stand/etc, and either a 60" umbrella or some kind of softbox.

I'm trying to decide what will best serve me right now seeing as i'm still pretty new to lighting. Can I get good soft light out of a smaller softbox than a larger umbrella? Is a larger source always better?

I'm sure they will. I picked up some old ones off craigslist on the cheap and they've been great for me so far. Maybe one misfire out of every 200-250 shots, but I can't complain, plus, until I'm shooting high end weddings (no time in the near future) - I think I can afford to miss a shot here and there.

My photek 60 is a monster, I only pull it out with the AB1600 to drive it.

theoretically the 45" umbrella is only 15 smaller, but its much more manageable / convenient size. A single sb800 is just the right amount of power for it.

werd, mine work fantastic, especially adding a better antenna and doing the double A mod.

Just be careful that if you're using an old high voltage flash you need a V2 receiver and not a V2s (low voltage, newer flashes). The V2 and V2s receivers both work with the V2 transmitter.

A larger light source will give you softer light if placed the same distance from the subject as a smaller source. bigger is usually better when it comes to lighting, however practical size is also a big consideration.

When I go on location, I take a small softbox, umbrella or my home made beauty dish simply because it's easier to haul around and set up.

However, for shooting beauty shots inside or if I really want the light to look killer, I'll break out my huge softbox and studio strobes.

well shit, half the stuff i ordered was out of stock  the stand, the flash, the bag, The triggers are coming in stock tomorrow.

I switched the order around to their new Lumopro flash, the triggers and the 60" brolly. Guess I'll head over to BH to see what stands they have in stock.
