    1911-style compact .45 with a double-stack 12-shot magazine.

Anybody own one? Shot one? Is it a good gun? I found a used one for $599 today and I'm debating whether I should pick it up before somebody else does. So tell me what you think.

I've never owned one, but why are you wanting what equivilates to a double stack GI 1911, from Para?

Not a flame, just seemed like an odd choice to me.

Because it's a .45 compact that holds 12 shots. And I'm not married to Para. That's just who makes it. If you know another brand of the same thing for less money, I'm open to suggestions.

The para wide bodies can be decent guns if you have a good 1911 smith put the work into them. Out of the box or with a bare bones reliability job they don't seem to run very well.

I've seen plenty of para's at the pistol matches. There is one squad of LAPD guys that runs them. Out of 6 of them only one guy has a gun that works. The other choke ugly double feeds or FTE. The kind where you have to drop a mag and then rack out the slide.

They were pretty popular back in the early 2000's but the competition crowd kind of went away from them. everyone but Todd Jarrett of course who gets a truck load of cash to shoot their stuff.

HK USP is garbage. high bore axis, short barrel for it's size, and long heavy trigger. Stupid dual recoil spring system makes the muzzle do figure 8's during recoil as it transitions from one spring to the next, exaggerates the heavy muzzle flip due to high bore axis, while you pull shots off target with the crappy trigger that feels like your dragging boat anchor down the beach.

But HK has the best marketing next to Larue I guess. Jack Baur kills everyone and their brother with a USP.

Hmm. That's bad news. I guess I'll keep looking.

Question, though. Unreliable for a competition shooter doesn't mean the same thing as unreliable for a guy like me who shoots recreationally, and enough to stay sharp for self-defense. I'm not going to be burning 2 or 3 hundred rounds in a day. Is it good enough that I can count on it to work under normal conditions, rather than competitions?

Not a big deal either way. I've got everything I need already. I'm just open to something nice that happens to cross my path.

Range toy maybe. Bet your life with it, I'd take a pass. To me any wide body 1911 is going to take some work but the para even more so. Take a look at the CZ 97b. I've seen some slick ones where the SA/DA trigger was replaced with the competition single stage trigger. It's got a slimmer grip that has the CZ ergonomics. The gun just points real nice. 10+1 capacity in 45 acp w/ flush fit mags. More if you run extended basepads.

Mine ran ok, but I got rid of it. Too thick to carry, to short to do much of anything else with. $600 is more than it would be worth to me (I dumped mine for about $450), but I haven't looked at going rates.

Quite the opposite of Yar's experience, my USP45 was one of the nicest shooting .45's I've shot and had a good trigger by any DA/SA standards. I would like to get another one of those. Never seen the compact with a 12rd mag though, they're all 8rds, semi-staggered in the USPc models.

my personal experience with para is very limited

a friend of mine had a p13 that he loved, never had a problem with it

i had a p14 that would never function right. FTF on almost every other round, through something between 300-500 rounds. i had a gunsmith look at it and he smoothed the ramp a bit but that was it... and it didn't help shit.

after that i didn't want to deal with it anymore so i got rid of it :o

You can occasionally catch badass deals on CZ97's over on the CZForums..... I missed one like Yar was describing a while back for like $350. I'm of course, still kicking myself.
