I'm considering buying this card: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1766896

it's a xfx geforce 6600 512mb pci-e sli card. i know all about the 7900 and how it's magical but it isnt in the budget for this computer.

what do you guys think of this card and the price? i've done a bit of researching but i'm not 100% sure.

    thanks guys.

also, would i be better off getting this card instead? :http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16814102684

one thing i dont understand is the memory in the card. how can some 256 cards be better than any 512 card?

It is very difficult to actually USE 512MB of VRAM. Remember that memory is just a "fast" place to store something, temporarily. With 3d games, these days, your video card needs to perform lots and lots of mathematical equations, where it uses a small amount of memory to do this -- then it stores the result in memory. Once a single "frame" is assembled, it is sent out to the monitor, and can be deleted from the cards memory, as it is no longer needed. For this reason, images must get much more complex, in order to require more memory. Two images of 1600x1200 take up relatively the same space, and adding VRAM won't generate one image any faster than the other. Faster processors, extended instruction sets, and FASTER memory, will aide greatly -- but increasing the memory on the card may have little or no effect.

Consequently, assuming you are working within a resolution that can be fully rendered on a 128MB card, then I would rather have a 128MB GDDR3 card, over a 512MB GDDR, assuming they used the same/similar cores. Of course this is an over-simplied example... But it shows a little bit how a 128MB 6600GT (GDDR3) card can signifigantly out-perform a 256MB 6600 card rendering at [email protected] The rendered product easily fits within the 128MB, so the 6600GT is not disadvantaged in this aspect, and the 6600 does not have further advantage with its remaining (unused) VRAM. The faster 6600GT core and GDDR3 memory will be the determining factor, making the 6600GT the faster card over the 6600.

THANK YOU. that is extremely helpful and i really appreciate it. now that i understand what i'm looking at i shouldn't have a problem selecting the best card in my price range. i guess the high memory numbers are meant for people like me who dont know everything about this stuff. they sell shitty cards by juicing up the ram i guess. i'm glad i didn't go ahead and buy that card i was looking at.

i figured as much. since it's a gt card in a newer series. the things that made me unsure are as follows:

price difference. the 6800 is more expensive, even being refurbished.

6800 has 16 pipelines compared with 12 on the 7600
256bit memory interface on the 6800 and 128 on the 7600.

that being said, the 7600 has a core clock speed of 580mhz compared with 350 on the 6600. is the the most important determining factor?

not that i know what any of that shit means.
