So I found a Stag model 2 (flat top with Midwest flip up rear sight) here locally for $800 new, which is a damn fine price for around here. My question is, since I was originally looking for a bushmaster or smith & wesson...what are you guys' opinions of stag? How do they compare? Any issues I should know about ahead of time?

I like mine, it's been good to me. $800 seems a little high, but that depends on your local market the most.

Stag's great value, the owner of Stag Arms is the son of the guy who own CMT. CMT in turn, is a large OEM supplier of quality parts.

Standard prices around here is $1100 for a bushmaster m4a3.

  5. I wouldn't feel bad about owning a Stag, except I think the big deer head logo is stupid. Quality-wise they make good stuff.

    Stag is good stuff.

1/9 barrels, but that's only an issue if you are going to shoot much stuff in the 70gr+ range.

Went ahead and picked it up. Once he learned what I do, he made it $810 out the door with a free pmag. I'm happy...

Also, since this is my first AR...any help or links you guys can provide as to proper cleaning and lubing would be appreciated...especially like what you guys use to lube? And where do you guys get the best selection/prices on parts/accessories?

  15. For parts, use the Brownells discount, check with THT's site, look on PKFirearms, Bravo Company, Rainier Arms, and a few I'm sure I'm forgetting.

For lube, people use lots of things; CLP, Mobil1, Gun Butter, SLIP2000, etc... They all work. I use Gun Butter. You shouldn't have a problem with any of the popular choices.

Here's my AR cleaning procedure. It's pretty easy.

A better view of the BCG after I took it out.

    Here's everything taken apart.

A few minutes with a rag, and here's how it looks. This is as far as I need to clean it. I stick a patch in the carrier where the bolt goes and use it to clean out the lube that's left in there. At this point there's just residue of the old lube. I see no need to use solvent to strip all every trace of lube off after this point.

Here's inside the upper before I wipe it down.

And here's after a minute with a rag and some q-tips. Obviously I also use a chamber brush in the chamber to clean in there, but it's hard to take pics of the chamber.

Really, that's all. I apply a fair amount of lube to the bolt rings, bolt body, cam pin, bolt lugs, carrier rails, and charging handle and the I throw it all together. Also, I just make a pass or two down the barrel with a boresnake to get it all clean in there. Make sure you've got a little oil on the moving parts in the lower, and just give the outside of the rifle a quick wipedown with a rag.

Me too. Some days I think about filling it in and engraving something else there.

Then I realize that is some faggot ARFCOM thing to do.

I use TW25B, MC3000/Slip2000 EWL. Better performance through large infusions of cash.

So my pmag, when it is fully loaded...won't seat. I have to remove one round from the mag to get it to seat. The factory mag however, seats fine with 30 rounds. What causes this?

  24. Are you sure you only have 30 rounds in it? Most pmags will take 31 rounds, and not seat properly.
