Everybody agrees that he is an extremely talented fighter. I'm of the opinion that he is a boring fighter, and never pushes the pace. I think it's unacceptable to constantly backpeddle in professional MMA, even if you win the fight by doing so. Other peoples opinions on this? Is he a boring fighter, or a master tactician?

To pre-empt some replies, I definitely agree that he has an amazing skillset, and in his exchanges sometimes shows off some awesome moves. The fact is that these exchanges are too infrequent, and he doesn't make enough of an effort to finish fights.

It's irritating to see a guy with so much skill to show continuously run away. I understand disengaging when his footing isn't right when his opponent steps in or if he can't read the attack, but he was just wasting time yesterday. If he wants to be elusive why doesn't he just step to the side and counter attack, rather sprinting backwards, he clearly has the ability to do it.

He pretty much Sylvia'd last nite.

I don't care how much skill he has, id rather watch Huston Alexander either knock someone out or get knocked out then any of his fights any day.

    Machida is crazy sick imo

He gets inside peoples head and frustrates them so that they make mistakes and give him openings. He was landing shit on tito constantly the whole fight, and whenever tito tried to land something of his own Machida would dodge/block it. I find his fights really entertaining actually, u gotta appreciate how quick he is and how he gives his opponents nothing.

He's nothing like Tim sylvia. Tim sylvia won by exploiting his ridiculous reach advantage and playing 100% defensively. Theres nothing to respect about a fighter who wins fights only because he has long arms, theres no skill in that. Machida wins his fights because hes super fast, super talented and fights really freaking intelligently.

It's just as exciting if not more exciting then watching GSP or other dominant wrestlers take someone down and hold them down while peppering them with shots til they give up or the time runs out imo.

I don't think he's a boring fighter. Tito's the one who made it boring. It's said that Machida landed almost 30 blows in the 1st round, and Tito none.

He's willing to engage those who are aggressive. The Sokou, Bonnar, and Franklin fights were pretty exciting and he whooped their asses.

It's just his karate style of being used to point fighting.

Inflict damage and avoid being damaged its the aim of the game. His avoiding damage skills are better then anyone he has foughts inflicting damage skills hence he keeps winning. I enjoy watching his fights as I appreciate the skill and talent he has in being 'elusive'

And its still more interesting of a fight. On 84 i would rate machida tito as the least exciting fight on the card.

A technical standup fight is as boring to those who dont fully understand it as a technical ground fight.

That's because he is very elusive! Fuck! I hate that word! For the love of god, stop calling him elusive Joe Rogan!!! They even put it as one of his strengths before the fight. That shit got me heated.

Boring as hell. It's really bad when I end up cheering for Tito Ortiz, who I can't stand. I went into the fight hoping to see Ortiz get KTFO, but by the 2nd round I wanted him to win.

In a real fight, it's a perfectly good tactic, because you do what you have to do to win. In a professional sporting fight, IMO, it's completely unacceptable. We paid to see a fight, not a race.

    He has real talent, though.

This isn't the WWE, i wanna see real fights with real fighters.

This is exactly how people first reacted to ground fighting in the UFC.

'we paid to see 2 guys fight, not cuddle'

Cmon, sprinting backwards at full speed is not at all being technical. Penn showed what good efficient stand up is yesterday by staying in the pocket and not getting hit. Machida was killing time cause he knew he was ahead on points and wanted to frustrate tito into making a mistake. It may be a perfectly valid tactic but its boring and people gave a lot of flak to Tim Sylvia for doing the same thing.

Tim Sylvia won fights cuz he was born with long arms, Machida wins fights cuz of his speed, intelligence, conditioning and talent.
