What's some decent metal for a beginner?
meh, definitely not very swell.
I personally like them but I'm into all that kind of music. Not much into rap or anything.
Their albums are fairly good. They have definitely evolved as a band over the years.
Wintersun, Dawn, Vehemence, Ensiferum, God Dethroned, Novembers Doom, Witchery, The Crown, At The Gates...I could go on.
I dunno man....that's some pretty advanced fare for a metal beginner...
AILD are a good band. Their new album is their best yet.
Ha ha, word but I to all those bands except November's Doom, never heard of them. I would suggest some older Megadeth and Pantera.
And since you asked about As I Lay Dying...they fucking suck, Unearth and All That Remains are metal-core...not just straight metal. But they have some similar sounds and are way better.
Some real old school thrash would be next on the list, with Exodus, Kreator, Slayer, Sodom, and Suicidal Tendencies.
From there you can explore some death metal, preferably Death, Morbid Angel, and Obituary, or even technical death with Atheist, Decapitated, and Necrophagist.
Then you can go to black metal, with Emperor, Immortal, Mayhem, and Satyricon.
Then give grind-core a chance with Cephalic Carnage, early Napalm Death, Nasum, and Pig Destroyer.
These are just the basics I guess, from there you should be able to find what suits you and what doesn't.
I you guys
Unearth and All That Remains sound just like As I Lay Dying....the only difference is that they have more wanker-iffic solos. I like All That Remains, but Unearth is way too generic for my tastes. At least ATR and AILD try to vary the sounds of their songs a little bit.
Here's my suggestions:
For a nice crust/death/prog-metal combo, try Burst - Origo.
Looking for a little grind/death? Anything by The Red Chord, but their latest one "Prey For Eyes" is pretty awesome. Although Napalm Death is pretty badass as well.
Death/prog? Opeth - Blackwater Park is a good place to start.
And if you want some southern-fried prog-metal goodness, check out Mastodon or Baroness.
The Red Chord's new one is good, but I would have to go with Fused Together in Revolving Doors.
But Unearth's The Oncoming Storm is a damn good album. To each his own I guess.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention power metal, more melodic, generally "happier" but check out Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray, Helloween, and Kamelot.
AILD new cd is definitely an improvement even though I still cant get into it. But check out Threat Signal, Soilwork, As Blood Runs Black, Lamb of God is still a favorite of mine, all their cd's (As the palaces burn and up) are fucking badass.
But All That Remains is still sick, it isn't anywhere close to being compared to fucking AILD, AILD needs to kick their shitty vocalist out and get a more metal sound and move out of the hardcore scene. It looks as if they are moving in the right step with each cd getting better, but still not quite there. But I agree with you, Unearth is definitely too bland for my tastes.
that whas pretty much my natural progression.
i spent a few years on each and slowly moved on
throw in a lot of other random smaller metal genre's and that's it
edit: oh and AILD blow.... i saw them live and walked out of discipherable range untill they left the stage.
Yeah I don't know, Pantera did it for me man. I just wanted to hear faster, heavier shit after them. I had my cousin too who recommended a lot of the old school heavy metal bands. He hated death metal, so I went on to discover that genre and all the sub-genres on my own. Now it's so much easier to get into metal, especially with the internet. Seems like I find a new band I like every other day.
As I Lay Dying is an alright band, most of their songs sound too much alike for me.
Classic bands (Pantera, Slayer, Metallica, etc) aside, I prefer Chimaira and Lamb of God out of the newer bands. I also really like Shadows Fall, but like the guitar work from All That Remains better. I also think the vocal range is better from All That Remains.
I also really like DevilDriver. Dez's vocals have always been a favorite of mine...
not sure what he meant by "beginner", like the basics or stuff that wasn't super brutal. I went for less brutal but if you want the classics...
old school black metal:
Novembers Doom is a pretty good Doom band. not really my stile but I've been listening to them a lot lateley. slow with about half normal vocals and half death metal vocals. all I have is The Pale Haunt Departure but its growing on me.
Dry Kill Logic
My faves on my mp3 player. I tend to like the metalcore style stuff that is more melodic than crushingly heavy or old-school style. Check some of them out:

I see, I will probably be checking that shit out soon. I need to expand on my doom metal, but Candlemass, Cathedral and My Dying Bride are pretty fucking awesome.
just put on some burzum and nasum
as i lay dying is alright.
ALID is way better live than off of their cd's.
