Generally you'd want something a bit longer for portaits.

its not better built, the 1.8 is a plastic toy. manual focusing is retarded and if you ever dop it, its a goner. Mine split in half last summer from maybe 4 feet up

Or, if you like manual focusing, consider the Carl Zeiss 50mm f/1.7. :mamoru:
50mm f/1.8 on a 350D sucks badly at focusing at night anyway, and you can buy it for like $30. From whaty I saw, it's sharper than both of the Canons.

    50mm f/1.4 pros:
    • better build
    • faster autofocus
    • faster in terms of light (f/1.4 vs f/1.8)
    • better bokeh
    • cooler gold ring
    • better MF

    50mm f/1.4 II cons:
    • cost, although deals can be had (my current 50 1.4 was 212 w/ hood and filter.. last 50mm 1.4 was 230)
    • range.. midrange - not long, not short, boring on 1.6x crop

    50mm f/1.8 II pros:
    • price, very cheap

    50mm f/1.8 cons:
    • range.. midrange - not long, not short, boring on 1.6x crop
    • bokeh not as nice
    • manual focus is weaksauces
    • af is nosier
    • build is very bad

    50mm f/1.8 I pros:
    • better build quality than 50mm f/1.8 II
    • smoother bokeh than 50mm f/1.8 II

    50mm f/1.8 I cons:
    • range.. midrange - not long, not short, boring on 1.6x crop
    • expensive for what it is
    • used 50mm f/1.4 can be had for only a bit more
