I read the complete review at http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond50/

Seeing some real good prices too for body + kit lens, and specials with the camera, 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 Aspherical Autofocus zoom lens, and 70-300mm f/4-5.6 LD 1:2 Macro Autofocus Zoom Lens.

:wtc: I know my Visa's good for it too.

I'm so ready, and mixed up at the same time.

    Pointers? Tips? Suggestions?

do you plan on doing any high ISO shots? you might want to reconsider if you are. but the nikon d50 is usually cheaper than the rebel xt and has better glass.

:wtc: I can't afford a Canon Digital Rebel. And the comparison showed that the D50 takes pics damn near as good as the D70, which is also a lot more moolah. :hs:

I bought a lightly used D70 with a bunch of included goodies for less than the price of a new D50. I was in the same boat as you (first DSLR I imagine) and I'm very happy with my choice. I'll likely never need to upgrade. It's worth a look IMO.

I've looked at both used and new. Yes it is my first DSLR, but I've found a new D50 with 2 lenses, a bag, tripod, cleaning kit, etc. for DAMN good money.

the kit lens on the d50 sucks dick...stay away from it. the d50 isn't bad, but you get more with the d70, IMO. and the price difference is around $200 on average.

Oh. 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 Aspherical Autofocus zoom lens, and 70-300mm f/4-5.6 LD 1:2 Macro Autofocus Zoom Lens., lol, I'd rather get body only and just look at it. :hsughw:

I'm a noob, so I'll use the lens(es) that come with the camera, and when I realize I need more, I'll look for more.

My photography instructor said to use your camera to its max before moving on to something better, same for lenses.

Get the body only and then buy a 18-70mm kit lens.

You quote your instructor but your actions (wanting two lenses, subpar or not) speaks differently. When you realize you need more, then you can look for more. Use the one lens you have to its max before moving on to something better, same with the camera. LOL!

The 18-70 is showing up as the same damn price as the camera body when I search for it.

Seriously dude...that is why you should get the D70. You get the 18-70 and a better body for almost the price you would pay for the D50 and a 18-70.

I would not pull the trigger on the D50 for 3 reasons:

    1. One wheel compared to two (this is important because you cannot change settings as quickly. Which sounds stupid now but you will regret it later.)
    2. No backlight on the LCD (pretty much useless in the dark)
    3. Did we mention the kit lens is shit

My opinion is get the D70...you take mostly landscape shots from what I have seen so you don't really need a telephoto yet. You would quickly get tired of the cheap 70-300 so don't pull the trigger on that until you have used the camera a bit and rented/borrowed the lens.

You don't want the 18-55, you want the 18-70. The 18-55 is the shitty kit lens from the D50.

But I agree with EOF, get a used D70 like I did. WAAAAAY more camera than you or I need now (assumption), but it'll be great when we get around to learning how to use it. And the price (used D70 vs new D50) is nearly the same.

yeah the lens kit isn't great, I got an AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm 1:4-5.6G ED lens and I love it.

That is like buying a good car then putting water in your gas so you pay less per gallon. It just doesn't make sense...but then again you are from the Cape so not everything makes sense all the time does it.....:fawk:

18-55 & 55-200 are both shit lenses. Just look at the price if bought separately...it screams shit. the only time this hasn't been the case is for the 50mm f/1.8.

if you get the d50, get body only and pick up either the 18-70 Nikon or get the 28-75 Tamron. If you get the d70, get it used with the kit lens.
