it varies by county but here you have to fill out the forms, get fingerprinted and hand it in to the county clerk, they send it to the sheriffs dept who does the background investigation and signs off on it then sends it back to the clerk who puts the whole package together and sends it to the county judge. then you have to set up an appointment to see him and he will hopefully grant you the permit..

Its like an interview, I guess he wants to see in person that you arent crazy.. get a look at your character. I have to bring a certificate that I took a handgun safety class and he gives you paperwork to take to the county clerks office and get your permit and add the pistol to it.

how many states actually make you get your state certificate through your county or whatever? here it goes straight to state police and i thought that was the norm except in NY and CA.

In Oregon, each county (and the county sheriff) is responsible for issuing the CHL's. It's kinda screwy, because there isn't a standardized card, each counties looks different.

Yes I am, that is how I got Glocks Homeland security discount. It also helps that I knew the county clerk, and 2 of my references, 1 is friends with the judge and the other is a retired Cop.
