I know you didn't ask for C&C but you're going to get it anyways.

By all means, I'm not a pro, but just giving you my two cents.

Children photos should make me feel warm and fuzzy, or at least make them super adorable. Your lighting is blunt, it's just like 'POW' harsh light, and your shadow areas are really dark, makes me feel uncomfortable. The bat and the extra clothes doesn't help either. Your son's expression makes me think "help, get me out of here!", and not in a good way.

Try shooting near a window if it's sunny. Or if you're using flash, bounce it off a ceiling or a wall(hopefully they're white) to make it a larger light source larger. Lastly, try to get your son to cooperate, tickle him, or make funny noises to make him giggle or smile. You have to to be quick, cause they're always on the sun.

Oh I definitely want and appreciate the c&c... I did ask for it in the title :)

My own personal style tends to be dark... I didn't like the toys/hat/bat either.. It was a candid shot, but I took it with the intention of clipping the background. There was more than enough ambient light to take the pic with no flash at all. I wanted to isolate him in darkness and I wanted it to say "get me out of here" as that was pretty much the point he was trying to get across to me at the moment. I also however want it to look good. I find it to be interesting in that it isn't a "typical" sunshine and butterflies kid picture. But I have a very very hard time being neutral with pics of my kid... to me they are all amazing... typical dad I guess.

    Here is the exif

Exposure: 0.125 sec (1/8) Aperture: f/9 Focal Length: 17 mm ISO Speed: 160 Exposure Bias: 0/6 EV Flash: Flash fired

But is it a good picture? Is my concept bad, or my execution? Or is it that picture itself that needs to be scrapped and I'll try again another day?

and just for the record, I also take "warm happy baby" pics :)
