I built this box last winter because my old rig took a dump...it was middle-of-the-road performance-wise when I built it, but now it's having trouble running any games at all. I'm willing to spend about $300 upgrading the video card, and since my motherboard supports SLI I'm wondering if two cards is actually better than one.

System specs, btw (don't bother pointing out the slow processor or the fact that I'm running an ATI card on an nVidia chipset...I know the weak points, just answer the original question :p )

    Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe
    AMD X2 3800+ @ 2200mhz
    2gb DDR2733
    ATI X1600 256mb
    Windows XP x64 Pro

The 8800GTX/Ultra has 128 shared stream processors
    The 8800GTS (320 or 640) has 96.
    An 8600 has 32.

You think two 32's will beat a 96?

an 8800gts 320 is almost the same performance as 2 8600gts in sli

and by this is mean it isn't even remotely worth doing

    2 x 8600gts vs. 1 640mb 8800gts
    http://xtreview.com/review202.htm

As you can see, it's fairly close on a lot of apps.

You have a much better choice of motherboards if you go with a single 8800, and considering that SLI is buggy with some games, and a pair of 8600's is almost the same $$ as a single 8800...

    nope, they are not.
don't look at synthetic benchmarks like 3dmark and game demos. those don't make use the full potential of the 8800s.
realworld gaming benchmarks is where it's all at,.... the diff is huge.
