can someone point me out to a on camera flash? the camera has a cold shoe and a pc socket only, so nothing sophisticated. i have ordered the 285 hv but can still cancell, the massive size is not appealing.

Size is everything when it comes to making good pictures. With size usually comes power. With power comes the ability to bounce your flash off of ceiling and walls. You also need the ability to swivel the flash head.

Ive heard conflicting reports on the 285 hvs now. Some say dont use them on the camera, some say its fine.

I want to order one, but If I cant/shouldnt use it on the camera, I might just pony up for the canon 430

I have used mine a my 20/30Ds. They work, but it's harsh and they are huge plus they don't swivel or use TTL. Also the foot on any 285 won't last long if your toting it around on the camera - eventually it will break. Get a used 420/430.

Google it, there's quite a bit and the 420 is not made anymore anyway. I have a 420, and love it for when I need something quick and shoe-mounted.

    cool camera!

I'm a fan of the 285 you ordered. full manual, zoom ability, and cheap.

No manual controls on the 420, ettl only. The 430 allows for manual control, 1 button to swivel left/right & up/down; the 420 has two separate buttons for adjustment. There are a few other differences, such as flash output, recycle times, etc. I have both and only use the 420 as a third slave.

There is a plug for the flash sync cord if that's what you're asking.

Yup. I use it all the time for off-camera flash, but it's also excellent on-camera.
