Just out of curiosity, would you guys like to see MMA fighting as an olympic sport?

We have boxing and judo and wrestling.

What do you think? It has a good following, but still isn't as commercial as boxing. It would allow some exposure to the up and coming amateurs.

I think its a good idea.

I don't think mma will ever get close to the olympics

Maybe BJJ or sub grappling but i don't think we'll ever get to see full on mma in the olympics. Even then if BJJ and sub grappling do get in the olympics i bet they will change alot because of safety and olympic committee concerns.

I think the closest thing to Olympic mma is combat sambo, also with mma they would have to turn it from a fight into a sport. The intention to hurt would probably have to go and i'm guessing holds like heel hooks and neck cranks would be gone aswell. It would probably look like Rings rules with headgear.

I thought it would be a much better representation of what the fighters from various countries have to offer.

If you think about it, it would generate huge ratings as the olympics are largely ignored by many.
The fighters we see are a very diverse group to. Its probably one of the best examples of a multi-national sport that the world has.

the other problem is you only see four countries competing in MMA.

    russia, america, brazil, and japan

bjj really only has america and brazil, and a little europe and japan

TKD and judo has tons and tons of countries around the world

I would rather see it than boxing. I don't fight but am a big fan. Olympics need to adjust to the sports of the times and mma is becoming a big draw.

Thats the beauty of Mixed Martial Arts.
Doesn't just have to be BJJ and Muay Thai.

The point is that the best trained and most dedicated win in what is truly a "take all comers" sport.

I think we'd also see more countries gain standing.
Look at what happened to olympic basketball in the early 90's. The Dream Team (USA) came in and absolutely destroyed everybody. It wasn't even fair. 4 years later, the US did very well again, sweeping everybody.
4 years later...uh oh, former unknowns have been hard at work and now, the supposed best in the world US basketball team gets serious competition and as much as it pains me to say it...they got their asses kicked a few times. The last summer olympics showed this too. Given the exposure and willingness to train, we could really see an awesome show of world-class talent.

I can definately seeing something similar entering the olympics. There would be a lot of rules changed though.

you might aswell have sanda and be done with it.

I don't think they'd ever allow gnp in the olympics especially when it's in tournament format.
