In for the answer. I was considering the same exact thing. Mixing the bumpers with regular plates.

Sounds good in theory. Until you get to 2 plates. :eek4:

Would be curious to hear if anyone has tried this.

On the "spinning" thing - I think this is a distinction between olympic bar versus standard bar. In a standard bar, I think the weights are locked in place and don't freely rotate independently of the bar like in an olympic bar. But that might not be right as I've only used Olympic bars like ever.

i'm pretty sure the 45 bumper plates are bigger around then normal 45's though if you put too much weight on the bar, you might risk bending or breaking it when you drop it. since it will have a small surface area to break the fall (just one 45 bumper on each end)

my 25'lb bumper plate is almost as big around as a 45.

Its the actual bar that spins, not the weight spinning on the bar. If you take a standard bar in any gym the ends rotate freely but if you spin them they come to a stop very quickly. Actual Oly bars spin for fucking days and they spin smooth as buttah, which is why they cost 3-4 times as much as a regular bar.

Are you planning on dropping it outside on concrete?

They have bearing in them and regular Oly bars don't. They also cost more because of the treatment the steel goes through versus that of a regualr bar. Its tempered.

Bumper plates are larger than a normal plate even though plate sizes vary by manufacturer.

The plates are there to cushion the impact of dropping the weights on the floor. This prevents plate breaking or damage to the floor but more importantly, keep the bar from breaking around the collars.

Setting it up in my basement. I'll probably get a rubber mat.

I was planning on using it when working out outside of my friend's garage.
I guess I will get rubber mats too.

last night i was back at a regular public gym - had troubles power cleaning 60kg with proper form :ugh: because the bar just doesnt spin

For any of you that have started or tried the oly lifts and gone.. WTF this is fucking hard - make sure the bar itself can spin freely as said above otherwise its a waste of time and you could hurt yourself i guess

Does that mean our numbers would be better if we've only been using regular bars???
